All is well at SEOE Geology Field Camp.

Having completed three map projects in the greater Moab area, we are on I-70 west headed through San Rafael Swell and into the Henry Mountains — the last surveyed of the mountain ranges in the lower 48. We’ll be without cell service for the next five days, and more than three hours from the nearest grocery store and hospital. Our students have proven their mettle and are ready for the challenge.

We have loaded up the coolers with food from the City Market in Moab so we can maintain our epicurean standards. Fortunately Camp Five is located less than a mile from a spring so we do not need to carry all of our water.

We are CPR, AED First Aid certified, are accompanied by an RN, and carry a satellite phone, backboard and advanced wilderness first aid kits, and have decades of collective wilderness experience. Nonetheless, it is exciting to be back of beyond for a bit.

We are looking forward to a respite from the hotter weather of the Moab area, although in the great scheme of things it has been quite pleasant with highs in the upper 80s and low humidity.

Unfortunately we have had to bag our foray into the East Humboldt and Ruby Mountains of northeast Nevada as a result of the heavy snowpack there. But we are grateful for what this means for the drought-stricken denizens of the American West.

We are about to lose service so photos will have to wait until we move from the Henry Mountains to the Canyon Range of central Utah.

Onward.
